Support in School

At Brierley, every child is supported as an individual - not just in the classroom, but across the whole school day.

We know that when families feel well-supported too, children thrive. This page explains what that looks like in practice and how to get in touch.

Our Family Support Team

We have a dedicated Family Support team here at Brierley, available Monday to Friday throughout the year. Whether you need help completing a form, want to talk something through, or just need pointing in the right direction — they're here for you. No question is too small.

You can reach them through ClassDojo or by calling the school office on 0113 323 0073.

Working together

You know your child better than anyone. We want to work with you, not just for you. That means regular communication through newsletters and ClassDojo, involvement in annual reviews and Education, Health and Care plan processes, and genuine opportunities to share your views throughout the year.

Our monthly coffee mornings are a great way to connect with staff, ask questions and hear what's going on in school.

How we support our learners

Our learners receive support that is shaped around them. We get to know each child well from the start — their strengths, their communication style, what helps them feel calm and ready to learn.

In school, this means:

Emotional and social support — our staff are trained to help learners understand and regulate their emotions. We use Zones of Regulation and other evidence-based approaches to help children develop strategies they can use both in school and at home.

Communication support — we work closely with our Speech and Language team to support every learner's communication needs. Many of our children use Makaton, visual supports, PECS or other communication aids, and this runs throughout the whole school day.

Therapeutic support — such as occupational therapy

Positive behaviour support — we focus on understanding why behaviour happens and responding with care and consistency.

Early Help

Sometimes families need a bit of extra support, and there's no shame in that. Early Help is there for any family going through a difficult time — it doesn't mean anything is wrong, it just means getting the right support sooner rather than later. If you're unsure whether Early Help might be useful for your family, speak to our Family Support team in confidence.

Get in touch

If you have any concerns about your wellbeing or the support they receive in school, or concerns about your own wellbeing, please don't wait - get in touch.
