Curriculum Newsletter: 28th February 2025

Welcome to our curriculum newsletter!

World Book Day is Coming- 6th March

We are celebrating World Book Day on 6th March with EVERYONE in school dressing to impress in a book themed costume OR pyjamas for a bed time story. Please don’t spend lots of money on a costume, homemade is wonderful or your PJ’s will do just the same job. Our theme is Creative Creatures and we will be spending the day exploring books and sharing stories.

Ramadan Mubarak

Many of our families and staff will be observing the Islamic month of Ramadan, a special month of prayer, fasting, reflection and community. Our children will be learning more about this holy month and celebrating with Eid parties at the end of Ramadan.

Talk4writing Spring 2

Talk4writing is part of our Literacy curriculum and every half term each class focuses on developing their vocabulary, reading and writing skills around the core text. Children will continue to have daily phonics or spelling lessons and to bring home reading books at their own reading level too. Our Talk4writing text is a driver for learning new language, modeling genres of writing and building an understanding of how texts work.

Semi Formal are reading:

Movement for Learning

Our movement curriculum is an integral part of every school day. All our learners begin their day with either the daily mile, a movement session or a sensory circuit. This is essential both for their fitness and to support our learners to be ready for learning after a busy bus ride to school. Sensory circuits are particularly important to support readiness for learning; children work through an alerting, organising and calming activity.

All  our Formal and Semi formal learners have two PE sessions each week where they access either the school sports hall, muga or 3G pitch. Our teachers plan skill based and game based lessons to ensure our learners have a mix of learning skills and competitive sports. This supports their physical development but also teaches team work, confidence and healthy lifestyles- essential skills for life.

Playtimes and lunches are also opportunities to develop physical skills and build fitness with games, climbing and movement activities available to play with our own staff team. Movement is a core curriculum area at Brierley and we are very proud to be supporting healthy lifestyles and physical literacy with all our learners.
