Post 16 and College information
Preparing Learners for Life after Co-op Academy Brierley
At Co-op Academy Brierley, the Careers team, led by Lucy Kinnear, Careers Lead, provides information, advice, and support to pupils and their families regarding FE provisions and training opportunities.
Young people leave Co-op Academy Brierley at the end of Year 11, as the school only caters for students up to this year group. They then move on to college or other Post-16 pathways. The college application process begins in September of their final academic year. While there is no formal deadline, beginning early helps to ensure a smooth transition. Annual Reviews must take place during the Autumn Term of a young person’s final year to allow sufficient time for SENSAP to consider requests and confirm placements.
Once the college of choice is agreed upon by the pupil and their parent/carer, the SEND team records this in the Annual Review minutes and alerts SENSAP, who then liaise with the chosen provision. Pupils interested in mainstream courses may need to apply online, and the school will support both students and families throughout this process.
Parents/Carers cannot request two placements to create a five-day provision. In Post-19 provisions, the minimum offer is 15 hours (three days). Where there is no social care involvement, parents or the school may wish to make a referral to the Adult Transition Team to determine if the young adult meets their criteria.
Parents/Carers are responsible for applying for transport to the next provision in the summer term for their son/daughter.

East SILC John Jamieson – Post-16 Programme (16–19 years)
East SILC John Jamieson – Post-16 Programme (16–19 years)
East SILC John Jamieson is a specialist provision for learners aged 16 to 19, with a Post-16 programme designed to prepare students for adulthood and life beyond school, regardless of the pathway they choose.
The curriculum is personalised and co-designed with input from the students themselves, as well as parents, carers, and staff, through consultations at the start of each academic year. This ensures that learning is relevant, engaging, and focused on the skills most important to each individual learner.
Skills commonly identified by students as priorities include:
- Self-help and independence skills: developed through cooking, managing finances, off-site leisure activities, enterprise projects, and understanding adult feelings and emotions.
- Physical and mobility development: supported through off-site sporting and leisure activities.
- Self-confidence and personal growth: fostered through work experience, internships, sports and physical activities, college link courses, residential visits, and other authentic adult experiences.
The programme is designed to provide a holistic approach to learning, supporting students to gain the practical, social, and emotional skills required for successful progression into further education, training, or employment.

West SILC: The Powerhouse – Post-16 Programme (16–19 years)
West SILC: The Powerhouse – Post-16 Programme (16–19 years)
The Powerhouse is West SILC’s specialist provision for learners aged 16 to 19, offering a personalised Post-16 programme designed to prepare students for adulthood, further education, and employment.
At The Powerhouse, each student’s learning journey is based on the Foundation Learning Programme, structured around two key strands: ‘Learning to Live’ and ‘Learning to Earn’. These strands enable students to develop practical and transferable skills by replicating real-life scenarios they may encounter now and in the future, with ongoing support to consolidate and build upon these skills. Regular access to the community ensures students develop confidence and competence in wider life skills.
Students are grouped according to ability rather than age, with differentiated learning resources tailored to individual needs. Over the course of the week, learners participate in three formal taught days alongside two life skills/PSHE sessions or work experience placements, depending on their personalised learning plan. This approach ensures a balanced focus on both academic and practical skills, preparing students for independent living, employment, and future education.
